Connecting dog parents through pawsome stories
Every dog has quirks — Pip has many. His most iconic is the “orphan routine.” With wide, imploring eyes and a soft demeanor, Pip approaches people as though he’s always the little lost soul in need of rescue, spinning a silent tale of woe that reliably results in coos, treats, and perhaps an extra scratch behind the ears. His family—fully aware of the act—can only laugh as new visitors fall under his spell.
“He just pretends—look at him!” they’ll say, while watching Pip bask in the glow of fresh attention.
Pip arrived with hind-leg tremors — gentle vibrations that worried the family. The vet explained they were likely a lingering habit from years spent outside, a way to warm himself through cold nights.
Charlotte and Dan committed to a physio routine. They practised gentle stretches, strengthening games, and Pip’s favourite part — a massage followed by a treat. Over time, the tremors eased. But the massage ritual stayed. On quiet evenings, Pip shuffles over, gazing at Charlotte as if to remind her, “It’s massage time now.”
Then came dental disease — the hardest chapter of all. Pip lost twenty-three teeth, leaving him with a new “gappy” grin. For a while it weighed heavily on everyone, but Pip adapted with remarkable ease. He eats his meals happily and proudly flashes the smile he has left.
His sensitivities remain: sudden beeps, the squeak of gym floors on TV, rattling doors, or shiny floors without grip. Charlotte and Dan have learned Pip’s map of the world, laying rugs across slippery areas and choosing walking routes with care. Their home is shaped around his comfort — an unspoken promise that he is always safe.
Pip’s long walks slowly transformed into shorter strolls, then slow wanderings, and sometimes spontaneous naps along the way. Charlotte and Dan adapted again. On longer adventures, they carry him in a soft sling across their chest. Pip adores it — resting against their heartbeat, snoring softly as the world rolls by.
From salt marshes to the Yorkshire hills, one thing stays the same: Pip travels through life in safety, gently rocked by the humans he trusts most.
Charlotte has always loved rescues — especially older dogs, the ones with stories already written into their faces. While puppies bring joy, it’s the chance to give comfort to an experienced dog that truly fills her heart.
She dreams, half-seriously, of a future doggy retirement home — a place where older dogs can settle into warmth and peace. In the meantime, she regularly boards dogs, turning the house into a shifting mosaic of personalities. Pip adapts to each one, cautious at first, then accepting.
One afternoon, overwhelmed by the bustle of visiting dogs, Pip decided he needed a break. Nose pressed to fabric, he nudged his little soft house across the room, inch by inch, until the doorway faced a quiet corner. Then he slipped inside, perfectly satisfied with his new hideaway.
Every new visiting dog also means a new bed for Pip to claim. Despite a comical number of dog beds at home, he always picks the newest or the one belonging to someone else — because in Pip’s world, every bed is a throne.
Perhaps the most touching bond Pip has is with Dan’s granddad.
Every Christmas, while the house fills with the chaos of family, a Great Dane, and endless chatter, Pip quietly disappears. The family always knows where to find him: curled in granddad’s lap, two heads resting together, dozing through the festivities.
Granddad and granddog. A silent snoozing pair.
A shared peace in the middle of noise.
Those moments say everything about who Pip is — a gentle soul who finds his people and holds them close.
Now 12 years old, Pip has blossomed into a dramatic, loving, quirky companion — timid yet trusting, needy yet endlessly giving. He turns every moment into an adventure and every friend into family.
With every gentle spin, every nudge for a massage, every crocodile he carries tenderly from room to room, Pip proves that the smallest souls really do leave the biggest pawprints.
And with Charlotte and Dan, he finally found what he’d always been searching for —
a forever home built around love, softness, and safety.
