Connecting dog parents through pawsome stories
If Joey is a whisper, Pepper is a thunderstorm. A Maltese Terrier mix with a personality that could fill entire rooms, she arrived in the family like a burst of sunshine. From her first moment, she demanded attention, communication, and love — a stark contrast to Joey’s reserved nature.
Her intelligence is nothing short of remarkable. She communicates with gentle paw gestures that speak volumes, retrieves balls with military precision, and possesses a nose that could rival any detective’s tracking skills.
Pepper did not have significant overlaps with other dogs before Joey. Her journey began after the loss of Fluffy, a white Cavalier cross Poodle who had previously lived with Nina. Pepper was specifically adopted to fill the void left by Fluffy’s passing. Nina came across Pepper while searching for a dog for her dad. Her dad wanted to name her Pepsi, but Nina’s boys eventually settled on “Pepper” — and the name stuck.
Pepper’s uncanny ability to locate balls is nothing short of miraculous. With a nose that could rival professional trackers, she seems to have an almost supernatural talent for detecting hidden or discarded balls during walks. No matter the terrain — park, field, or street — Pepper will inevitably emerge with a ball, as if summoned by some invisible canine magic.
Her retrieval skills are legendary within the family, with Nina often marvelling at how Pepper can find a ball where no one else would even think to look. But her true passion extends beyond balls to an equally impressive stick-collecting obsession.
Her stick selection process is a performance art in itself. She doesn’t just pick up sticks — she strategically selects the most improbably large, unwieldy branches she can find. The bigger the stick, the more determined she becomes. Nina has countless stories of Pepper struggling heroically to drag enormous branches that are comically disproportionate to her size, her determination absolutely unwavering.
During walks, it’s become a running joke that Pepper will inevitably try to bring home the most ridiculous stick possible, dragging it with a mix of pride and stubborn determination that leaves everyone watching in amused disbelief. Her stick-collecting has become so notorious that Nina now has a growing pile of them at home — a museum of Pepper’s most impressive finds.
Perhaps Pepper’s most legendary trait is her absolute inability to be separated from Nina during shopping trips. The moment Nina steps into a shop without her, Pepper transforms into a vocal tornado of anxiety — crying, barking, and putting on a full public performance.
A recent trip to Lincoln City became the ultimate display of her dramatic loyalty. What was meant to be a quick shopping stop turned into an unforgettable scene that left Nina’s children half-laughing, half-hiding in embarrassment. Other shoppers turned, wondering what was happening, only to find a small dog with a giant personality expressing her absolute disapproval at being left behind.
Now, Joey and Pepper are inseparable — the calm and the chaos in perfect balance. Joey’s quiet dignity grounds her whirlwind energy; Pepper’s enthusiasm keeps him young. They walk side by side, each complementing what the other lacks, proof that harmony doesn’t come from sameness but from understanding.
